The Bible tells us that we are all created in the image of God. Yet somehow that image has been marred, distorted, in some ways even ruined! You and I are meant to represent God! To be an example of what He is like. That’s what it means when it says that we are made in His image, in His likeness.

I. I am reminded of the verse in Jeremiah 18:2 – “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you My message.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.” In verse 6 He says “…Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in My hand…” He is the potter and we are the clay, but if the clay is not pliable, flexible in His hands…it becomes marred and He has to start all over again!

II. Although we are all created in the image of God, not everyone is a “child” of God.

John 1:12 tells us – “Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

Who has the right to BECOME children of God? Those who receive Him.

John writing to Christians in I John 3:1 writes – “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be, has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3 All who have this hope in Him purify themselves, just as He is pure.”

Galatians 4:4 – “But when the set time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are His sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are His child, God has made you also an heir.”

Romans 8:9 – “You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.”

Romans 8:14 – “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order that we may also share in His glory.”

II. I’m not sure that every Christian truly understands what it means to be a child of God. It’s far more than just a nice saying. It’s far more than the fact that God loves us and calls us His children!

A genuine child has the DNA of their parents! A genuine child of God has the nature of their heavenly Father on the inside of them! They have a new nature! The old sinful nature is done away with on the cross! Once you receive Christ you receive a new nature! A new heart and a new spirit God puts on the inside of you!

Ephesians 4:24 says – “Put on your new nature, created to be like God–truly righteous and holy.”

III. John 3:6 says – “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.”

You and I are ALL born of the flesh. We have flesh and blood just like our parents. But Jesus said we must be born of the Spirit! Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit! There is a physical birth and then there is spiritual birth.

Jesus said in John 3:5 – “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”

My question to you today is not have you been born physically — obviously you have! My question is have you been born “of the spirit”? Has the Spirit of God entered your spirit and given you new life?! I guarantee you’ll know it if it happens because everything changes! Your desires change! You perspective changes! Your guilt is removed. The hardness of your heart is melted! You begin to want to know God. You begin to want to obey Him. Before, you didn’t pay much attention to the things of God. Before, you could sin and it really wouldn’t bother you much. But once you’ve been born from above, the Holy Spirit lives inside you and you have a desire to change! You want to become more like Jesus! You want to love more. To serve more. You want to know Him more. Before, you had no desire for spiritual things. But now you desire the things of God!

A son or a daughter acts like their parents in many ways.

Jesus said of the Pharisees –
“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” – John 8:44

Ouch! Those were religious leaders He was talking to!

IV. So how do we BECOME children of God? We must be BORN! Born again! Not a sect, not a religion, but an experience! Where the Spirit of God enters our spirit and gives us a new life!

Three steps must be taken:
(1) Admit that you are a sinner. Repent from those sins.
(2) Ask God’s forgiveness
(3) Invite Him to come into your heart!
